Video surveillance at Kaiserplatz and Aachen bus station
Information on the "Aachen city center" camera system
The Aachen police always focus on openness and transparency in their police measures. This article is therefore also intended to draw the attention of citizens, business owners and all other interested parties to the video surveillance system that has been put into operation in Aachen city center.
The Aachen city center is to become safer.
The Aachen police have been operating police video surveillance systems in the area of the Aachen bus station since 2017. In retrospect, these have proven their worth both in preventing crimes and in helping to solve them. Due to these measurable successes and the positive outlook for the future, Aachen police have extended their video surveillance to the area around Aachen's Kaiserplatz since August 2023.
Commissioning and locations - facts and figures
The Aachen police intend to use the video surveillance systems at these locations to detect crimes at an early stage and intervene immediately in dangerous situations. The long-term aim is to deter perpetrators and prevent future crimes in order to increase your safety.
The area around Kaiserplatz and the Aachen bus station is monitored by video from a total of 25 different perspectives. The video surveillance is carried out at different times, based on police operational and crime evaluations. The recorded data is automatically deleted after 14 days unless it is used as evidence in criminal proceedings. Specially trained Aachen police officers monitor and evaluate the image data transmitted to the operations control center in order to be able to react quickly and at an early stage.
Signs at these locations inform citizens about the video surveillance. They contain mandatory legal information as well as the contact details of the official data protection officer. The video surveillance system is switched off during peaceful gatherings within the observation areas. If it is possible to see into residential and/or business premises, these areas are made unrecognizable.
The legal basis is derived from Section 15a PolG NRW.
